First Aid at work (3-day)

It is a requirement of health and safety legislation that employers provide a safe and healthy
working environment for their employees. Employers are legally required to carry out a first aid
needs assessment within the workplace. This assessment should identify the appropriate level of
trained first aid personnel, along with the necessary equipment and facilities. Where the
assessment identifies a need for qualified first aiders, this qualification will ensure you have
appropriately trained staff in place.

This course provides learners with a qualification at the highest level of first aid, fully meeting the
requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
 

What will you cover?
The First Aid at Work qualification is made up of two units:
Unit 1: Emergency First Aid in the Workplace

• The role and responsibilities of a first aider

• Assessing an emergency situation

• Managing unresponsive casualties who are not breathing normally

• Managing unresponsive casualties who are breathing normally

• Choking

• Bleeding

•  Shock

• Minor injuries

Unit 2: Recognition and Management of Illness and Injury in the Workplace

• Conducting secondary surveys

•  Injuries to bones, muscles and joints

• Suspected head and spinal injuries

• Suspected chest injuries

• Burns and scalds

• Eye injuries

• Suspected poisoning

• Anaphylaxis

• Major illness

 

Assessment & Certificate
Assessment is carried out continuously throughout the course to evaluate your knowledge, skills
and understanding in managing and treating a range of workplace injuries and illnesses.

 

Qualification Renewal
The qualification is valid for three years from the date of assessment. Qualification holders must
renew within this period of validity. To re-qualify, learners must be assessed against all learning
outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit. This can be achieved by attending a 12hour
(2-day) First Aid at Work requalification course.
