Paediatric First Aid (2-day)

Legal Requirements:
From September 2016, all newly qualified early years staff holding a full and relevant Level 2 or
Level 3 childcare qualification must have a current Paediatric First Aid or Emergency Paediatric
First Aid certificate to meet EYFS requirements and be counted within stafftochild ratios.

This requirement was introduced following government consultation and review under the EYFS
framework.

 

Paediatric First Aid (12 hours: 2-DAYS)
The Paediatric First Aid course combines practical, handson training with classroombased
theoretical learning and includes practical assessment in CPR and first aid skills. The course has
been developed by professionals experienced in working with infants and children and is
particularly suitable for teachers, childminders, crèche staff, playgroup workers, and anyone who
has a responsibility for the care of children and infants and wishes to achieve a nationally
regulated Level 3 qualification.
This interactive twoday course meets current Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Ofsted
requirements and guidance.
What will you cover?
Unit 1: Paediatric Emergency First Aid

  • Roles and responsibilities of a paediatric first aider

  • Assessing an emergency situation

  • Managing unresponsive infants and children who are not breathing normally

  • Managing unresponsive infants and children who are breathing normally

  • Choking

  • Bleeding

  • Shock

 Bites, stings, and minor injuries
Unit 2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury

  •  Injuries to bones, muscles, and joints

  • Suspected head and spinal injuries

  • Foreign body and eye injuries

  • Acute medical conditions and sudden illness

  • Extremes of body temperature

  • Electric shock

  •  Burns and scalds

  • Suspected poisoning

  • Anaphylaxis
     

Assessment & Certificate
Assessment takes place continuously throughout the duration of the course and evaluates your
ability to act safely, promptly, and effectively in emergency situations involving infants and
children. It confirms your knowledge, skills, and understanding in managing and treating a wide
range of paediatric injuries and illnesses.

 

Qualification Renewal
To maintain this qualification, learners must be reassessed against all learning outcomes and
assessment criteria for both units. This is achieved by attending the same 12hour Paediatric First
Aid course.

The Combined Paediatric First Aid and First Aid at Work course covers a comprehensive range
of first aid topics for both adults and children, including:

  • Managing unresponsive casualties who are breathing and not breathing normally

  •  Chronic medical conditions and sudden illness

  • Effects of extreme heat and cold

  • Poisoning

  •  Eye, ear, and nose injuries

  •  Electric shock

  • Bites and stings

 

Assessment & Certificate
The RLSS UK Combined Paediatric First Aid (PFA) and First Aid at Work (FAW) course includes
a mixture of practical training and classroombased learning. Learners are practically assessed
on CPR and first aid skills, and all assessment criteria must be successfully achieved to gain the
qualification.

UCAS POINTS: 8 points

 

Qualification Renewal

To renew the Combined PFA and FAW certificate, learners must be reassessed against all
learning outcomes and assessment criteria for the qualification. Renewal is completed by
reattending the full 22 hours of course training.
